On September 23 the European Data Protection Supervisor (the “EDPS”) Giovanni Buttarelli published his opinion “Coherent enforcement of fundamental rights in the age of big data”.

This opinion is part of an ongoing project, launched in March 2014 with the EDPS’ “Preliminary Opinion on Privacy and Competitiveness in the Age of Big Data”.
It addresses the concern that concentration in digital markets could harm the interests of individuals as data subjects and consumers.

Among other, opinion recommends to establish an Digital Clearing House – a voluntary network of regulatory bodies – for enforcement in the EU digital sector, to voluntarily share information about possible abuses in the digital ecosystem and the most effective way of tackling them.
